Good Morning Geekery #7

Welcome to the seventh edition of Good Morning Geekery! Every Monday and Friday morning @ 9am we’ll be posting geeky and nerdy questions and want to get your opinions. They could be from comics, gaming, my first year biology textbook, or any other area of geek and nerd culture. After all, what’s more fun than a Never Ending Raging Debate?!

Good Morning Geekery #7

In the last few weeks an image comparing possible role models within pop culture and geek culture has sparked a lot of controversy on the web.

While well seeming at first glance the above image has sparked a firestorm amongst many bloggers. Below are two examples of bloggers calling this image out.

A rival image has been making it’s rounds in response to the original.

What do you think?

  1. If you’re going to cherry-pick, you can make any sufficiently large dataset say whatever you want. I think that’s what we’re seeing with all three sets of photos.

An objective view of the industries, with regards to larger trends in the whole data would be more useful. I don’t have that data but my gut instinct is that geek culture is playing catch-up with pop culture on the feminism front.

  2. I’m not sure that constitutes a real counter argument. The comparison in my mind is not their clothing (Bella is even fully clothed) but their roles – passive, relatively useless women vs women who can actually get something done. (Admittedly Janeway crashes the ship whenever she drives it, but at least she’s trying something) And I don’t know the three girls on the right, but Leia and Leeloo both accomplished plenty.
