A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…

I generally don’t go in for anything Star Wars outside the original trilogy, with the exception being the LEGO Star Wars games. I’m not interested in expanded universe books or games. Until now!

Dark Horse announced yesterday that they’ll be publishing a new Star Wars comic that is set immediately after A New Hope. Writer Brian Wood says “[This] will pretend…no other films were ever made or books ever written aside from A New Hope.” Just think about what that means! Not only did the prequels not happen, but Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi are wiped out too. Luke won’t get his hand chopped off by Vader, Han won’t be frozen in carbonite, Luke and Leia won’t find out they’re twins, and on and on! Well maybe all that stuff will happen, but it won’t be the same. I can’t decide if it’s awesome or terrible. Dark Horse editor Randy Stradley said that the new stories will focus on “aspects of the characters and their relationships that have, in many ways, been glossed over in the past, or shoved aside in favor of big action set pieces.” All in all, I’m going to at least check it out. Plus, look at this cover:

How can you resist? I love the style, and the nods towards the original A New Hope art. It’s due out in January, just in time for my birthday!

So what do you think? Is this a terrible or wonderful idea? What do you think the stories will be about?
